NTRODUCTION

The Survey of Occupational Injuries, Illnesses and Fatalities in the Petroleum Industry (OII) is conducted annually.

Participation is voluntary and the number of participating companies varies from year to year. Therefore, the reader should exercise caution when using this data to characterize the performance of the industry as a whole. Participants are asked to submit data according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) guidelines. Therefore, this report provides incidence rates per 200,000 hours worked on the same basis as those reported by BLS.

Historical Background

API has been collecting data regarding workplace injuries, illnesses and fatalities in The Survey of Occupational Injuries, Illnesses and Fatalities in the Petroleum Industry (OII) since 1931. Prior to the 1999 survey, companies submitted employee data for their U.S. operations only. In 2000, API expanded the scope of the OII and began collecting employee and contract worker data for operations both inside and outside of the United States.

A second change introduced in 2000 gave participants the ability to submit their data electronically over the Internet using The Occupational Injuries, Illnesses and Fatalities Reporting System at http://oii.api.org/. Features of this online database include automatic data checks, online instructions, and report generation. In addition, companies willing to share their data have the ability to produce customized benchmarking reports. While conducting the 2001 survey, API learned that a number of companies no longer track certain data. Consequently, it was decided to make those data fields optional in the 2002 survey. These optional data fields are The Average Number of Employees, Job Transfer or Restriction, All Injury Cases, and All Illness Cases

Current System In 2010, the Occupational Injuries, Illnesses, and Fatalities Reporting System was redesigned. The data entry forms are more user-friendly and the reporting features now give participants the capability to:

  • Create customized company specific ad-hoc reports for benchmarking,

  • Create trending reports that include graphs,

  • Create, edit, and save report templates, and

  • Export reports in the following formats:

  • Excel, Word, CSV, PDF, XML, MHTML, or TIFF.

Title : 2002 Survey on Petroleum Industry Occupational Injuries, Illnesses, and Fatalities Summary Report: Aggregate Data Only

Description :

INTRODUCTION

The American Petroleum Institute (API) has published this report since 1931. It includes information regarding workplace injuries, illnesses, fatalities, lost workday cases, and incidence rates by industry segment and functions.

Before the 1999 survey, companies were only asked to submit data about their own employees in their U.S. operations. In 2000, the scope was expanded to include contractor workers and non U.S. operations. Last year, in an effort to further increase the value of this report, more changes were made to the survey. Appendix A summarizes the changes implemented in the 2001 survey.

Another major change introduced in 2000 was the ability for companies to submit their data electronically over the Internet. Some of the features of this online database include automatic data checks, online instructions, and reports. It also provides companies that are willing to share their data with the ability to produce customized reports allowing them to benchmark against their peers.

Participation in the API annual survey is voluntary and company participation varies from year to year. Therefore, exercise caution when using this data to characterize the performance of the industry as a whole. However, seventy-seven companies that responded to this year's survey with U.S. operations data also responded to last year's survey. These seventy-seven companies represent eighty-three percent of the total number of employees and eighty-four percent of the total number of hours reported to API for 2001.

Participants were asked to submit data according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Recordkeeping Guidelines for Occupational Injuries and Illnesses, September 1986 edition. Therefore, this report provides incidence rates per 200,000 hours worked on the same basis as those reported by BLS.

Ninety-one companies (including four subsidiaries) participated in the 2001 survey. Sixty-four of them agreed to share their company data. Please note that the total listed in the tables for each function is the total for all reporting companies.

Publication Date: 06/01/1988 - Complete Document

Description :

SUMMARY OF OCCUPATIONAL INJURIES, ILLNESSES, AND FATALITIES IN THE PETROLEUM INDUSTRY FOR 1987

Participants in the 1987 summary were asked to submit data according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Recordkeeping Guidelines for Occupational Injuries and Illnesses - September 1986 Edition. The survey provides incidence rates per 200,000 work hours on the same basis as those reported by the BLS.

This report is based on data submitted to the American Petroleum Institute (API) by ninety-six oil and gas companies employing over 254,000 persons with a work experience of more than 516,000 hours. The Total Case Incidence Rate was found to be 3.89 for 1987, as compared to 3.45 for 1986. This rate is based on the number of total recordable cases per 100 full time workers or 200,000 hours worked.

The Days Away From Work Incidence Rate for 1987 averaged 1.08 per 200,000 hours worked the same rate as for 1986. The ratio of workers to the Number of Days Away From Work injuries during 1987 averaged 92 per injury, compared to 90 per injury in 1986. One death among petroleum workers was reported in 1987 for every 12,713 employees, as compared to one death for every 21,936 workers employed in 1986.

The total figures for each company are shown in the following tables under "the "ALL FUNCTIONS" heading. Each company is listed numerically by identification number throughout the tabulations. The key to this identification system is found at the end of the report.

NOTE: Company participation in the API Annual Survey is voluntary and fluctuates from year to year.
